Saturday Surprise: Boom! Cyclists Galore on Old Atascocita Road! 6/22/2024
On Saturday bike rides I look forward to seeing other cyclists. Today I saw many more than usual on Old Atascocita Road east of FM2100 (see the video). Getting an early start at 8:12 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike I rode through Elmgrove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, North Woodland Hills Village, Bear Branch Village, Kings Forest, and Kingwood Greens to get to W. Lake Houston Parkway. On the way to FM1960 I saw the first cyclists. As I turned left onto FM1960 the orange barrels were gone and ... read more at

Route Revamp: More Miles and Memories on the Cervelo Caledonia 6/21/2024
Переглядів 322 години тому
For awhile I wanted to change the New Caney - Gene Campbell Road route name because it doesn't really describe where the ride goes. Today I added a side trip to The Highlands from FM1314 and it was time to come up with a better name: New Caney - Gene Campbell Blvd - The Highlands - FM1314. Much better description and about 2 miles longer as well. Wheels down and rolling at 9:56 AM on my Cervelo...

First day of summer. Now the sunlight starts getting shorter. Enjoy it while you can. After a 2 month absence today I rode the Kingwood to Ramsey Road - Huffman route with a few alterations. At first it was promising, then not promising and then promising again. That describes today's bike ride. I started at 10:56 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I waited for the streets to dry some after some light rain earlier. I planned on biking north following the Kingwood - FM1485 - Kingwood route. After the rain tricked me yesterday to ride indoors I made a concerted effort to start early today at 9:01 AM. Aboard my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike I headed south and east to FM2100 and Huffman. Before I got there in Walden I searched out the trails adding them to the route for the first time. This created a new route name, Atascocita - Walden Trails - Spanish Cove Drive. How do you like your Helix? I just ordered one. What group did you get? Is your free hub loud or is it just the recording?

    • @RickAnkrum
      @RickAnkrum 10 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and asking. I like the Helix. Since I bought it I added another bike to my fleet and that bumped the Helix down to #3 on my preference list: #1 Cervelo Caledonia, #2 Canyon Endurace CF7, #4 Trek Marlin 8 MTB. I got the SRAM Rival AXS etap group which I have on the Cervelo and Canyon. I really like electronic shifting. I added the Rival Power Meter crankarm and ICAN Cycling Alpha 46 carbon wheels. The freewheel is noisy but I tune it out now. I have the same wheels on the Cervelo and Canyon. The Helix feels harsh when I ride over rough roads compared to the carbon framed Cervelo and Canyon. There is a street with about 100 feet of rough cobbles that I use to compare the road absorption. The Helix weighs about 4 pounds more than those bikes too. The harsh ride and extra weight are the reasons it is #3. I've put 4246 miles on it. I wanted to experience a titanium frame bike. I also owned a Lynskey R300 with Ultegra mechanical groupset. I sold it and bought the Helix. Enjoy your new bike. Let know what you think of the Helix.

    Until I got into my 60's (I'm now 72) I used to do a lot of riding on roads like you do (lived in Austin from 1973 until 2020). I now do most of my riding on local hike/bike trails (mostly paved) in the Pflugerville area where I live. As I've gotten older, I still love cycling but no longer ride road bikes. I prefer mountain bikes (I have both a full suspension and two hard tails) and my crank forward semi-recumbent bicycle I bought last year from Phoenix Bike Wrx. These bikes use MTB tires, which are less susceptible to flats. They aren't as fast as road bikes, but I'm okay with that these days. I just want them to work well, and to provide a good workout without the incessant worry of dealing with motor traffic. Be careful out there!

      I have a MTB but have not rode it much. No handy trails to ride on. I like walking out the back door and getting on my bike to ride. Maybe as I get older that will change. Thanks for commenting and watching.

      I have thought about tubeless. Maybe when these tires wear out. They are not maintenance free though from I read. Change the sealant in 6 months, keep the valve stem from clogging. The recent run of flats started when a sharp rock caused a flat. Before that flats rarely happened.

    Hi Rick, this was a fascinating ride (wind and all) on a trail I had no idea was there. I live in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, but throughout the 90's, I conducted business in Brownsville one day each week. So this sure brought back some great memories. Thanks for sharing.

      Glad you enjoyed the ride. The trail may not have existed back in the 90's. It is about as flat as you can get except for the railroad overpass.

    You were in my neck of the woods ! The wind was brutal today . Going south on that over pass must of been a heck of a workout . 😧💨💨🚴🏼

      It was hard work. I got out of the saddle going about 9 mph up over. The let down was pedaling down into the wind to keep moving.😂

    I was one of the 100 milers. I finished in 5hr 21 min with a avg speed of 18.7mph. The weather couldn’t be any more perfect! Wind did pick up on the home stretch but I’m not complaining. It could’ve been much stronger! Lol Next event for me will be the 7th annual resaca city bike tour-62 miles! March 16th San Benito. Hope to see you there!

      Great ride on the 100 miles. Yes, I rode the Jalapeno 100 when the wind was stronger. Have a great ride in San Benito. I'll be back in Houston. Thanks for the information about the Resaca City Bike Tour. I added to the event calendar at Texbiker.net

    Good stuff , buddy . I rode the 100 miler at the Jalapeño this morning . But didn’t get much video . Thanks for posting this footage. The winds picked significantly on the home stretch . The morning was perfect . This was my first century and did it in 6hrs and 11 minutes . Not the fastest, but my kids and wife were impressed . Lol ! God bless. 💨🚴🏼🙏🏼
